Abstract
The article deals with a clinical study of 28 cases of primary retroperitoneal tumor treated (at
the Presbyterian hospital, Taegu, Korea) during the past 9¨öyears from Jan. 1960 to Aug. 1969.
The clinical diagnosis of the cases were confirmed by tissue biopsy. It¢¥s age and sex distribution,
clinical symptoms, physical findings, histopathologic classification were analyzed. Brief clinical
summaries of individual cases, incliding their pathological diagnosis and clinical management were
recorded. From this study, the authors have been able to summarize as follows:
1. The primary retroperitoneal tumors may occur in any age group, but the study indicates that
17 cases (about 60%) out of 28 were under the age of 40. The ratio between the male and female
was 3:1.
2. The common clinical manifestations at the time of admission were gastrointestinal tract
symptoms: 67%, systemic manfestation : 39%, genitourinary tract symptoms: 21%. The positive
findings of physical examination were palpable abdominal mass: 96%, abdominal enlargement
accompanying tenderness: 35%.
3. There were 6 cases of benign retroperitoneal tumor in which 3 were cystic teratoma. The
remainder 22 cases were all malignant tumor, including 7 cases of lymphoma.
4. The clinical diagnosis of retroperitoneal tumors was made by analyzing the clinical symptoms,
positive local physical findings, and special X-ray examinations, such as intravenous pyelography,
small and large bowel series with flioroscopy. Among them, the excretory urography was most
helpful. 7 cases (25%) out of 28 were diagnosed preoperatively by biopsy.
5. 5 cases of benign tumor were resectable and 5 cases of malignant nature tumor were partially
resected. 9 cases out of 16 unresectable group had already developed distant metastases. The unre
sectable malignant cases were treated by X-ray irradiation after proper biopsies were obtained
for tissue diagnosis.
